Full description

Begin your day by meeting your guide at one of our meeting points. After a short drive to the starting point, we step into the snow and your adventure begins. Your guide will equip you with snowshoes and poles, and walk you through the basics so you feel comfortable from the start. No previous experience is needed: snowshoeing is simple, intuitive, and suitable for everyone, and the pace is always adapted to the group.

From the very first steps, you’ll quickly feel the calm of Lapland. We walk through snow-covered pine and birch forests, away from the crowds, where the only sound is the soft crunch of snow under your feet. Along the way, your guide shares stories about the region, from Arctic wildlife and how people live here in winter, to local traditions and legends that bring the landscape to life. If we’re lucky, we might even see fresh animal tracks in the snow.

About halfway through the tour, we stop at a traditional forest kota, a cozy wooden shelter. Here, we light a fire, grill local sausages, and enjoy hot drinks in a warm and relaxed atmosphere. It’s a moment to slow down, connect, and simply enjoy being out here.

After the break, we continue higher up the fell, following trails toward the summit of Kesänki (weather permitting). The climb is gentle and steady, and the views gradually open up over the surrounding fells and frozen lakes. Up there, beyond the views, you may also see trees completely covered in snow, sometimes called “tykky trees”, a unique feature of Lapland winters.

The way down is often the highlight of the day. Instead of staying on a packed trail, we walk through soft, untouched snow, moving freely between the trees. This part feels more playful and natural, and gives a real sense of freedom and immersion. Step by step, you make your own path through the forest, surrounded by silence and wide open space. By the time we return, you won’t just have photos, but a real feeling of what Lapland is all about: quiet, space, and a deep connection to nature.

About snowshoeing in Ylläs

Ylläs is one of the best destinations in Finnish Lapland for snowshoeing. Located within Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, the area is known for its wide open fells, offering panoramic views over vast Arctic landscapes, and its snow-covered forests, where the natural phenomenon called tykky (or tykkylumi) transforms trees into heavy, frozen shapes that create iconic winter scenery. Together, these landscapes offer ideal conditions for guided winter tours.

Snowshoeing here is all about the fells. From the lower forest trails up to open hilltops, the scenery constantly changes, offering wide views over untouched wilderness and the surrounding Lapland landscape. It is a place where silence is part of the experience, far from roads and crowded areas. Our guided tours are designed to move at a relaxed pace, allowing time to enjoy the surroundings and experience the calm of the Arctic winter. Whether you are new to snowshoeing or simply looking for a more authentic way to explore Lapland, this is one of the best ways to discover the Ylläs region.

FAQ

Snowshoeing is simple, intuitive, and suitable for everyone. No previous experience is needed, and the pace is always adapted to the group. When we go uphill, we usually follow a packed trail to make the ascent easier and more comfortable. We take regular breaks, and your guide is there to support you along the way. As long as you’re comfortable walking for a few hours, you’ll be absolutely fine.

Staying warm is the key to enjoying the experience. We recommend dressing in layers: a thermal base layer, an insulating mid-layer, and a warm outer layer (such as a ski jacket and pants or a down jacket). Warm gloves, a hat, and proper winter boots are essential. We provide snowshoes and poles, and winter boots can also be rented on request if needed.

Winter temperatures in Lapland usually range between -5°C and -25°C, but it can occasionally get colder. The air here is very dry, and since we stay active throughout the tour, most people feel comfortable with the right clothing. We also include a campfire break to warm up, and your guide will always adapt the pace according to the conditions.

You can cancel your booking up to 24 hours before departure for a full refund. Simply contact us by email or phone, and your refund will be processed immediately. If weather conditions affect safety, we will offer either a reschedule or a full refund.

This tour is designed to feel personal, quiet, and immersive. We operate in small groups and head away from the busiest areas to explore more untouched landscapes. It’s not about rushing from one point to another, but about taking the time to experience the silence, the forest, and the unique atmosphere of Lapland. The campfire break, the off-trail descent through soft snow, and the local insights from your guide all make it a truly special experience.

Kevin lead us on an excellent snowshoe trip. The chosen route was glorious and he stopped along the way to give us insights into the flora and fauna. The stop at the Kota was also excellent - grilling our own sausages on the fire. They were delicious! I also really appreciated the hotel pick up and drop off. Kevin was super friendly and helpful, even offering to give recommendations or answer other questions we had while on holiday if we dropped him an email. I would have no hesitation in recommending this tour.

Vielen lieben Dank Kevin.

A l'année prochaine !
