Overview
There is no better way to discover the arctic wilderness than traveling on skis. This might be our most challenging tour, but it is certainly the most rewarding one. From boreal forests to arctic fells, this expedition takes you through all different kinds of landscapes that will leave you in awe. But the most beautiful thing you might discover is within yourself. By sleeping in remote (yet comfortable) wilderness huts, you will feel totally off grid, and you will come back with a sense of having accomplished something special.
Fitness & Difficulty
It is not necessary to have any previous experience of nordic or alpine skiing. We will use sliding snowshoes, which look like skis but are very stable, intuitive and easy to use. Nonetheless, for this tour you should be in good health and have a good level of fitness as we will ski about 11-17km a day, with a few climbs involved each day.
Accomodation
The first two nights and last two nights are spent in a fully equipped, comfortable and charming wooden cottage. For the rest of the trip we will sleep in wilderness huts provided by Metsähallitus, the state-owned organism in charge of the forestry department of Finland. The huts are basic, they have no electricity or running water. Yet, they are quite spacious and comfortable, with mattresses and blankets provided. There is a wood stove (fireplace) inside all huts to keep us warm.
Please note that since this is a remote wilderness tour, some changes to the itinerary are possible due to weather, unavailability and similar reasons.

ARRIVAL DAY
Your guide will meet you in Kittilä Airport. After a drive through the beautiful roads of Lapland, you will arrive in a charming wooden cottage in which cocktails and tapas will be waiting for you. We will spend the evening getting to know each other around a tasty dinner cooked by our means.
DAY 1 - PREPARATION DAY
The first morning will be all about preparation. We will have a group briefing in which we will introduce a more detailed plan of the trip, as well as safety instructions but also what and how to pack for the expedition. During the afternoon, you will pack all the necessary belongings inside your sledge. You will then have a chance to get familiar with the gear we will use during the expedition and maybe try the sliding snowshoes in real conditions to get a better feeling of it.
DAY 2 - HETTA TO SIOSKURU - 14KM
The first day of the expedition. Early morning we will leave from Hetta, the starting place of our trip. The first part of the trail will be inside a beautiful boreal forest where we can breath the purest air in Europe. For lunch, we will stop in a local coffee in the middle of the forest only accessible by skis or snowmobile. In the afternoon, we will ski up a fell from which we will get incredible views, before finally reaching our first hut. During the evening, you will get familiar with the routines inside the hut (making fire, melting snow, drying clothes and gear...).
DAY 3 - SIOSKURU TO HANNUKURU - 11KM
After waking up in the middle of unreal surroundings, we will get ready for our second skiing day. This will be the shortest trip of the expedition, with quite easy terrain. We will aim to reach the hut for lunch time in order to eat next to a warm fire. From that point, you can decide between spending the afternoon relaxing or exploring the surroundings for the most courageous ones, without the hassle of pulling a sledge behind. We will end the day with a typical wooden sauna, where you can experience rolling in the snow, if you dare.
DAY 4 - HANNUKURU TO NAMMALAKURU - 17KM
The third skiing day will be the longest and most challenging of the week. Most of the morning is spent on easy terrain, skiing downhill or on flat ground before reaching a typical wooden Kota where we will stop for lunch. The beginning of the afternoon will be spent on flat ground as well, where we should advance quite fast, before the last part of the day and the biggest challenge of the expedition: couple of kilometers climbing a fell. After a good hour of effort, we will be rewarded with incredbile views and the most beautiful hut of the trip in which we will spend our last night in the wilderness.
DAY 5 - NAMMALAKURU TO PALLAS - 14KM
With the end of the expedition right at the corner, we begin our fourth and last skiing day. Most of the trail is going downhill or on flat ground, with some short and mild uphill here and there. In the middle of the afternoon we should reach our final destination from which we will get picked up and driven to our final accommodation, a lovely and comfy wooden cottage. With the feeling of having overcome ourselves, we will enjoy a homemade tasty dinner and appreciate all the comfort we were missing during the week.
DAY 6 - FREE DAY
After a long and cosy night, we get up with a sense of being grateful for every simple thing we experience: water running from the tap, clean clothes, warm shower… The rest of the day is spent the way you want to. Some may decide to relax indoors next to a warm and cosy fire. Some may decide to do more activities (see options). You might also take the time to visit traditional souvenir shops or go downhill skiing. Before our last dinner together, we will have a closing ceremony with cocktails and tapas.
DEPARTURE DAY
We will drop you off at Kittilä airport with the hope of seeing you again, whether as a guest for another trip or simply as friends who shared something special together.
