Overview

We designed this trip for those looking for the perfect balance between going on adventures and enjoying the relaxing pace of life in Lapland. With a nice cosy log cabin as our base, we will head out each day on a different adventure. Once it gets dark, we will spend our evenings looking for the northern lights, hoping we get to see the skies dance. To really complete the whole experience, we will go for an overnight trip to a wilderness hut where we will spend the night before skiing back the next day.

Fitness & Difficulty

For the overnight skiing trip, it is not necessary to have any previous experience of nordic or alpine skiing. We will use sliding snowshoes, which look like skis but are very stable, intuitive and easy to use. Nonetheless, you should be in good health and have an average to good level of fitness and be happy to be outdoors for 5-6 hours in the day.

The rest of the activities don't require any level of fitness or specific skills. Snowmobiles are very stable, easy to use and we will drive at a speed that is comfortable for all participants.

All the activities are optional, you are welcome to opt out of any of them and explore the surroundings yourself or enjoy a day in the cabin.

Accomodation

Except for the overnight skiing trip, we rent spacious, charming wooden cabins for the week. Depending on the availability and the number of participants, we will either share one cabin all together or be split between two or more cabins so that there is enough space to accomodate all participants of the tour and the guide. Each room will be shared between two persons (exceptions can be made on demand). Each cabin is equipped with a traditional Finnish sauna.

For the overnight skiing trip, we sleep in wilderness huts provided by Metsähallitus, a state-owned enterprise that produces environmental services. The huts are relatively comfortable, with mattresses and pillows provided. There is no electricity or running water (water is obtained by melting snow or from frozen lakes). There is a wood stove (fireplace) inside all huts to keep us warm.

Equipment & Clothes

A detailed recommended packing list for personal items to bring will be sent with your booking documentation. For some handy tips on what you might want to pack click here.

All times are approximate and are based on our experience of groups' average speed. This doesn’t include snack and lunch breaks, or photo stops, of which there will be plenty. We also reserve the right to change the itinerary and/or the order of the days in the situation of unexpected events.

ARRIVAL DAY

Your guide will meet you in Kittilä Airport. After a drive through the beautiful roads of Lapland, you will arrive in a charming wooden cottage in which cocktails and tapas will be waiting for you. We will spend the evening getting to know each other around a tasty dinner cooked by our means.

DAY 1 - FULL DAY SNOWMOBILE

We start our week with a full day snowmobiling. After a short briefing and safety instructions, we will spend the first part of the morning getting used to drive a snowmobile on easy terrain. Once we start feeling more comfortable driving we will go off the beaten track, navigating between trees inside a magical boreal forest. For lunch we will stop in an authentic restaurant accessible by snowmobile, right in the middle of the forest, and enjoy a traditional salmon soup. For the afternoon, we will hit the road again until we reach the high plateau of a fell from where we will enjoy unreal 360 degrees view over the arctic surroundings.

DAY 2 - WINTER SKILLS

During this day we will organise a few winter skills workshops, where you will learn essential arctic skills, such as how to make fire in winter conditions, how to drill the ice and fetch water in frozen lakes (and maybe catch a fish) and more. During the afternoon, we will teach you how to read a map and orienteer in Finnish boreal forests and fells. There will be an orienteering race at the end in which you will need to find flags that we hide in the winter surroundings. The last part of the day will be spent preparing for the overnight skiing trip.

DAY 3 - SKI DAY 1 (OVERNIGHT)

Early morning we will leave from our cabin with all the needed gear for the overnight trip. During the first part of the expedition you will have time to get familiar with the skis and the rest of the equipment. After navigating inside boreal forests and over small fells, we will reach our hut for the night. During the evening, you will get familiar with the routines inside the hut (making fire, melting snow, drying clothes and gear...).

DAY 4 - SKI DAY 2

While waking up in complete wilderness, we enjoy the feeling of being totally off grid. After a good breakfast we slowly start our way back to our starting point. Depending on the snow conditions, we will likely take a slightly different route and discover new arctic landscapes. Late afternoon, once we arrive in our wooden cabin, we will experience a traditional Finnish sauna that will completely relax our bodies. We will finish the evening by enjoying a tasty, well-deserved dinner.

DAY 5 - FREE DAY

After a long and cosy night, we get up with a sense of being grateful for every simple thing we experience: water running from the tap, clean clothes, warm shower… The rest of the day is spent the way you want to. Some may decide to relax indoors next to a warm and cosy fire. Some may decide to do more activities (see options). You might also take the time to visit traditional souvenir shops or go downhill skiing.

DAY 6 - HUSKY RIDE & SNOWVILLAGE

We will start our last day by going to a husky farm. After getting the safety instructions, you will go for a ride with your own sled dog team (2 persons per sledge - exceptions on demand). After the ride, you will get a chance to thank the dogs and pet them, and a moment with the musher to ask him/her all the questions you want. Then, we head out to the famous Snowvillage. There, we will enjoy a tasty lunch and visit this year's exhibition of ice and snow sculptures. Once we get back to our cabin, and before our last dinner together, we will have a closing ceremony with sauna, cocktails and tapas.

DEPARTURE DAY

We will drop you off at Kittilä airport with the hope of seeing you again, whether as a guest for another trip or simply as friends who shared something special together.
