Day 2 - Backcountry Skiing Adventure

This day will be dedicated to a first immersion in ski touring on the heights of Kesänki Fell. Your journey begins with a peaceful traverse through a snow-covered boreal forest before emerging above the tree line to admire a breathtaking panorama of the surrounding seven fells. Along the way, you’ll take a break in a traditional kota, where you can enjoy a warm meal or simply relax by the fire. A perfect day to get familiar with the terrain and soak in the iconic landscapes of Lapland.

Day 3 - Snowshoe Hike to Kesänki Fell & Expedition Preparations

This day takes you on an exhilarating snowmobile adventure across the vast snowy expanses of Ylläs. After a briefing on safety and driving techniques, you’ll set off on a journey deep into the Lappish wilderness. Gliding through silent boreal forests and shimmering frozen lakes, the landscape unfolds at the rhythm of your machine, offering a unique sense of freedom. Upon returning to the chalet in the late afternoon, it will be time to prepare for the upcoming expedition. Gear organization, final advice from your guide, and equipment adjustments—all set in place so you can embark on the next adventure with a clear mind, ready to explore the remote and untouched landscapes of Nammalakuru.

Days 4 to 6 - Three Days Around Nammalakuru

The heart of this adventure unfolds over the next three days as you ski toward the remote refuge of Nammalakuru, nestled deep in an untouched and pristine setting. The first day will take you through snowy forests, frozen lakes, and rolling landscapes until you reach this secluded refuge, where you will spend two nights. The following day is dedicated to exploring the surroundings: whether you choose a full-day ski tour to uncover the breathtaking scenery or prefer a moment of relaxation at the refuge, the experience will be shaped by your desires and the weather conditions. Each evening, you'll enjoy the warmth of the cabin, a hearty meal, and, if the skies are clear, the mesmerizing dance of the Northern Lights above.

No prior experience in Nordic or alpine skiing is required for this adventure. We will be using OAC skis, specially designed to be stable, intuitive, and easy to master. However, a moderate level of fitness is necessary, as a 15 km trek is required to reach the Nammalakuru refuge. Prepare for an accessible yet engaging experience, where the combination of wilderness and physical effort creates unforgettable moments in the heart of Lapland.

Accommodation

During this journey, you will spend two nights at the Nammalakuru refuge. While lacking electricity and running water, it offers everything needed for a comfortable stay in the wild. Mattresses and blankets are provided for a restful sleep, while a wood-burning stove provides comforting warmth, its flickering flames creating a cozy and serene atmosphere. The rest of the adventure will be spent in a fully equipped chalet, offering comfort and a welcoming environment. Surrounded by nature, this wooden chalet will be the perfect place to relax and recharge after each day’s adventure.

FAQ

Yes, the tour is designed to be accessible even if you’ve never tried Nordic skiing before. We start with a short introduction to the technique, and the pace is always adapted to the group. That said, backcountry skiing is a skill-based activity: some people pick it up quickly, others need a bit more time. While previous skiing experience can help, what matters most is being open to learning something new in an outdoor environment, even if you’ve never skied before. If you’re comfortable being active outdoors and open to a bit of adventure, you’ll be absolutely fine.

Staying warm and comfortable is essential. We recommend layering: a thermal base layer, an insulating mid-layer, and a warm outer layer such as a ski jacket and ski pants or a down jacket. Warm gloves, a hat, and winter boots are essential as well. We provide backcountry skis and poles, and if needed, winter boots can be rented on request.

Lea - Australia

March 2026

I just had the most incredible week adventuring in Finnish lapland. Kevin and Lily are amazing guides who care so much about making sure we have wonderful experience, and I really appreciated the attention to detail which started from the beginning when Kevin asked me what I liked to eat for breakfast! We stayed in a super cute log cabin a bit out of town (perfect for northern lights watching!) And then every day was filled with a different activity- OAC skiis, snow shoeing, and cross country skiing, all in this wonderful winter wonderland. My highlight of course was skiing out to the wilderness hut and spending two nights immersed in Palas National Park. As someone with limited ski experience, I was worried about the distance but Kevin made it very doable so take a chance and go for the winter wonderland experience of your life!
